Carbohydrates provide the energy a person need during exercises. Calories are needed if a person is into lifting weights to increase muscle. Fats are important for the body to function correctly. The body needs carbohydrates but eating the wrong carbohydrates is harmful. Sugar and processed flour are quickly absorbed by the body’s digestive system. As a result of this carbohydrate overload that causes the release of huge amounts of insulin in the body. The release of insulin is bad for the heart and it encourages weight gain. The insulin is the main hormone of the body that is responsible for the storage of fat. It is best to eat carbohydrates that are slowly digested by the body. Whole grain flour, oats, hearty vegetables and unprocessed grains are among the carbohydrates that are slowly digested. These are complex carbohydrates that are rich in vitamins and other nutrients that are beneficial to the body and it is also high in fiber which is important in the digestive system to run smoothly and healthy.

Monounsaturated fatty acids are good fats that can lower the bad cholesterol in the body. Healthy food like olive oil, nuts, fish oil, and various seed oils are high in monounsaturated fatty acids that can be helpful in lowering down bad cholesterol and reduces the risk of heart diseases. The number of calories the body needs depends on the metabolism and how physically active a person is.
