You’re heading on to University and your dad’s pushing you to go into medicine, but you don’t want to be a doctor!

Even if you’re an adult and this scenario doesn’t ring true – there often seems to be a battle between the inner visionary and the pragmatist. The good news is that you can both be happy once you realise all the varied opportunities there are in big industries like health care.

Truthfully, with today’s economy as volatile as it is it doesn’t hurt to look for career fields that actually have a future. From green technology to medical jobs, there are certain careers that are thriving because there is simply more demand than is being met. With health care you can still pursue almost any field your heart desires, be it Accounting, Human Resources, Graphic Design/Marketing, Insurance – even Food and Hospitality. Look at the workings of a hospital, alone – if it was just a bunch of doctors running the show who would do all the rest of the work? And if a hospital isn’t your thing then consider all of the avenues available in private practises – from office management to sales.

With a little research you may find any number of avenues to pursue – ones that have potential for future growth and that actually interest you. Chances are you will be able to find work in the medical industry whilst still being true to yourself. And if your dad thinks it was all his idea? All the better.

Cancer Research UK is the world’s leading independent charity dedicated to cancer research. Cancer Research carries out scientific research to help prevent, diagnose and treat cancer. They have discovered new ways to beat cancer that together have saved hundreds of thousands of lives across the world.

Cancer Research’s TV campaigns feature real people – cancer survivors, patients and their loved ones illustrate the impact that Cancer Research UK has had on their lives. They have also featured cancer doctors in the past, whose research is funded by the organisation, to illustrate the progress they are making.

Alex Warne

Alex, 14, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in 2003 when he was just six. His parents took him to hospital after he lost energy and had aches in his legs and he quickly started a year of intensive chemotherapy treatment.

It was an exceptionally difficult time for the family as, three weeks after Alex’s diagnosis, his grandfather was told he had terminal pancreatic cancer and passed away five months later. After the intensive treatment, Alex underwent two and a quarter years of maintenance chemotherapy during which he had to be in a wheelchair at times.

Alex also had to have his feet straightened as the chemotherapy had overstretched his Achilles tendons. Alex is now back at school, taking part in a wide range of sports and has also developed his writing skills. He wrote a story called The Heaven Flower which was published in 2010.

Mum Julie said: “Alex is such an amazing teenager. I want other kids who are going through cancer to be inspired by Alex.” “But we will never have our carefree life back again – if there is even a slight problem of illness with Alex, I switch to the day of diagnosis again.”

The drug Xenical is used to enhance weight loss by blocking the absorption of fat. It usually is not prescribed the slightly overweight but is intended toward those who are clinically obese—those who have a Body Mass Index of at least 30.

Take Xenical with meals, not to exceed three capsules each day. If you skip a dose or forget to take it, do not double-dose next time. Simply take one tablet at your next meal. Taking more than one dose—one capsule per meal—does not retroactively eliminate fat nor does it change the effectiveness of the current dose.

Xenical has been proven to provide greater benefit than just block fat absorption. It can lower blood pressure, so tell your doctor if low blood pressure is a problem. It can also lower anti-diabetes medication and reduced bad cholesterol levels.

Unlike many dietary medication and weight-loss products, Xenical is not addictive. Once you stop taking the medication, it should leave no trace behind after three days. However, do not continue to take the medication once you near your weight loss goal at which time reasonable eating habits and an approved exercise program should take over your weight loss methods.

If your physician and you agree that you should start taking Xenical again, it can safely be taken for up to two years of continuous use.

A person who has suffered a brain injury due to an injury to their head will be needing rehabilitation. This treatment can take a long time, sometimes years. Anyone who has experienced this type of injury will want to get legal help and advice so they make the right choices. They can get all this information and free guidance about rehabilitation following a brain injury.

During this rehabilitation, the brain will recover following a pattern of brain development. The gross, often called the large-scale systems, must be retrained first. Then the fine systems such as focus, attention, and perceptual skills are then retrained or redeveloped. Both these areas will develop before complex intellectual activity can be restored.

Immediately following the injury is when the effects of brain damage is usually the greatest. It is possible for some effects to be misleading because of temporary swelling. These are not permanent damages, as the swelling or bruising go away, some functions in the brain will return. This makes predicting long-term problems very difficult during the first few weeks following the accident. The recovery of cognitive and communication problems depend on many factors and recovery from a brain injury will vary from patient to patient.
